What Exactly Is a Dethatcher and How Is It Supposed to Work

February 16th, 2012 No comments

If you have never heard about what a dethatcher is, and what it can do, then you’re really missing out. A dethatcher is essentially the same thing as a power rake. You can use it for removing excess amounts of thatch out of your lawn. Thatch is basically an unwanted organic material that builds up in your lawn. It is generally composed of stolons and rhizomes that grows across your lawn. It can also be composed of moss, and dead grasses that tend to build up over time. The reason why you want to take these out is because if there is too much of it in your lawn, it can actually choke out the lawn.  They can keep the lawn from receiving the water, air, sunlight, and nutrients that it needs in order to grow healthy. This is one of the reasons why lawn thatching is so important.

Thatching helps to get rid of these build ups before it can become a problem. Because it has vertically spinning blades, it beats the surface of the soil and removes anything that is not alive. All that is left is the most healthy part of your lawn.  Whether or not you need to thatch depends a lot on the type of grass that you have in your lawn. Some types of grass may never need it. Other types of grass like St. Augustine and creeping fescue may need to be thatched on a regular basis in order to be healthy. In addition, some lawns get a lot of moss that grows in. This is especially true for the grass that grow in cool weather grasses, in places like Portland or Seattle. It is important to get rid of the moss with a power rake so that you can have a nice looking lawn in the spring and summer.

What Are Three Things You Can Do to Have Better Aeration?

February 16th, 2012 No comments

When you’re thinking about using a lawn aerator to aerate your lawn, there are some things that you can do to improve the results that you get. Typically the best aeration is done with a quart aerator, and it will give you deeper plugs if you do it properly. In order to get the best results, there are a few things that you should consider doing:

First of all, you need to make sure that you that you aerate your lawn during the right time of year. For warm weather grasses, the best time to aerate them is in the spring. If you have cool weather grasses, you can aerate them in the spring, and even in the fall and get pretty good results. Choosing the right time to aerate it is important. If you try and aerate in the middle of summer, you’re probably too hard, and you will not get very deep plugs. Likewise, aerating in the wintertime isn’t very good for your lawn.

The second thing that you should take into consideration is to repair your lawn by watering it the night before. If it is already very wet, you don’t need to water it, but if it is starting to be dry, make sure to water it. Having a moist soil will allow you to get half of an inch to an inch deep plugs when you aerate your lawn.  In order for lawn aeration to be effective, you want to be able to get plugs that are at least 2 inches deep, but 3 inches is even better. The depth of the plugs doesn’t depend as much on the machine you’re using as it does on how the soil is when you aerate it.

The third thing you can do to have better results with lawn aeration is to make sure that you are using all of your weights. Some aerators have slide in weights. Other ones have a water barrel that can be filled to make the machine heavier. Make sure that both of these things are done in order to have the machine be as heavy as possible so that you can get deeper plugs when you aerate your lawn.

Five Main Steps to Remove Paint From Blinds and Shutters

February 9th, 2012 No comments

Removing paint from blinds and shutters can seem like a daunting task.  If it doesn’t sound like an exciting project, consider calling in a professional service who will take care of it quickly and economically.  Alternatively, if you’re feeling more adventurous, read on to learn about the five main steps to remove paint from blinds and shutters.

  1. Prep.  Clean the blinds and shutters while they are still attached to the window frame.  Use a gentle, organic soap and warm water and gently remove all dust and any build up that could interfere with the removal of the paint.
  2. Remove.  Remove the blinds and shutters from the window frame.  Take them down so that you will not get any paint remover on your windowsill or on any carpet or valuable furnishings inside your home.
  3. Dissemble.  Remove the slats and major hardware from your blinds and shutters so that you can concentrate on one section at a time.  When working with blinds and shutters, there can be a lot of little pieces of hardware so take your time and make sure to lay everything out in an orderly fashion.
  4. Remove Paint.  Using a paint remover, gently remove the paint from the slats of your blinds and plantation shutters. Make sure that you wear a protective mask that will keep any paint chips or chemicals from the paint remover from going into your eyes or mouth.  Ideally, you will want to work outside but if space or temperature doesn’t permit, then just make sure you are in a well ventilated room.
  5. Patience.  Stay patient as you work on removing paint from your blinds and shutters.  It will take some effort and time as you will not be able to do it quickly, but the result will be worthwhile if you move slowly and do a detailed job.

If you decide that you don’t have the time or energy to remove paint from blinds and shutters yourself, you can always call Budget Blinds for a free consultation and allow the professionals to take care of it for you.  If not, good luck with the paint removal and have fun with your new project!

How To Choose The Right Janitorial Services For Your Business?

February 6th, 2012 No comments

The very best way for you to choose a janitorial services company is to find one that has very good references. The way that you do this is typically try finding word-of-mouth referrals. In businesses that are like your own, what janitorial service are they using? Are they using a small company? Are they using a large corporation? There can be advantages to both. When you hire a small company, the advantage is that they can probably meet your specific needs a lot better. In addition, they will probably take good care of you just because you represent a portion of their business. It is likely that the owner themselves, will also be doing some of the work for you. If you go with a large corporation, there is a little bit more stability.

Usually, the employees from larger companies are not quite as experienced as they would be if you would have picked a smaller company. However, they have better logistics and scheduling than small businesses are. The downside to hiring a large janitor service company is that they tend to be a little bit more expensive than a smaller company. The best type of janitor cleaning company that most people prefer is an old, established, small business. This way they know that they will be there for a while, they know they have done a very good job servicing customers in the past, and they also know that they’re going to be saving money versus having to hire a large cleaning company to come out and do the work for them.

No matter who you decide to hire, make sure to check references. References are very important at helping people to determine which is the best person the hire. Typically if people get very good references, then they are highly recommended, and they are more likely to do a good job for you. People who don’t even have references, can’t be is expected to do as good a job for you.

If You Have Problems With Cleaning Tile, Consider Hiring A Janitor Service Or Home Cleaning Service

February 6th, 2012 No comments

If you have problems with dirty tile, there are a few different alternatives. If you don’t want to clean it yourself, you can hire a professional grout and tile cleaner, or you can hire a home cleaning or janitor service business to come in and do the cleaning for you. In my opinion, it is a good idea to hire cleaning or janitor services, because I think that they are going to charge less than a tile cleaning expert. Since you don’t often have to pay the cleaners until the job is complete, you might as well have the home cleaners come in and do the work for you. They might spend a little bit more time in order to get the grout clean, but it should look just as good as if you had hired the tile cleaner to come out and do the work for you. The only difference is it will cost you less money hiring them than hiring a professional tile cleaner.  Most home or office cleaning services charge between $30-$35 per hour.

Most professional tile cleaners will charge anywhere between $50 and $100 per hour depending on what types of services they are doing for you. So, in my opinion it is better to go with the cleaning service that charges you less money. That way you can have tile that is nice and clean for only half of the cost.

If you know how to clean grout and tile by yourself, it will be even cheaper. Most of the time, a steam cleaner is all that you need to be able to do a professional looking job. In addition, owning your own steam cleaner can also save you a lot of time.  If you do the work yourself instead of hiring someone, you also don’t have to wait around for the cleaner to show up and then be home all day when they are doing their work. Doing it yourself will give you more flexibility throughout your day.

Types of Sandblast Media

January 31st, 2012 No comments

When it comes to sandblast media, you have a lot of options to choose from. The type of sandblast media you choose will depend upon the type of project you are working on, and it’s important to choose correctly. If you use sandblast media that is too harsh for your surface, you could destroy the project altogether. To help you decide what you need for your particular project, we’ve put together a list of the most common types and their typical uses. Pumice, the most gentle of all sandblast media, is a great option for removing paint and finishes from soft wood. If you are working with wood and aren’t sure how it will hold up, start with pumice. If it doesn’t seem to remove everything the first time, send your project through a few more times before switching to a media that is more harsh.

If you are looking for media that is both gentle and biodegradable, try walnut shell or corn cob. These are both great for more delicate projects, and you can throw them away after using without having to worry about the environment. While these types of media do not last as long as others, they are safe to be disposed of in the trash or composted after just one or two uses. If you don’t sandblast very often, either of these would be a great option. Another environmentally-friendly media for sandblasting is glass. Glass media can be used over and over and then recycled as much as 30 times. You can purchase glass media in two forms: beads, or grit. Beads will leave a soft, bright finish on your project, while grit gives a rougher finish. You can even purchase glass grit made from recycled soda bottles.

If you choose to use glass, make sure to recycle it rather than throwing it away. If you need a heavy-duty media that won’t damage your surface, try plastic beads. These are extremely durable and work well for stripping paint off of automobiles or other metal surfaces, but they won’t scratch or damage the underlying surface. Plastic can also be reused and recycled, so if you choose plastic beads, make sure they don’t end up in the trash. If you do a lot of sandblasting and are looking for a media that is long-lasting, you may want to try aluminum oxide. It can be used over and over without needing to be replaced and is gentle enough for your more delicate projects. It is not recyclable, however, and should be disposed of with great care.

Silicon carbide is the best media for your toughest projects. It is the hardest media option and gets the job done quickly. It should not be used on wood or other soft surfaces. Silicon carbide lasts as long as aluminum oxide, so it is a great choice if you want to keep your sandblasting costs low. Steel grit works well for those extra-slick surfaces that don’t like to take paint. It leaves tiny etchings on the surface, helping it take that first coat of paint or finish. Steel is also long-lasting and leaves very little mess. It is also recyclable. One of the newest types of sandblast media is dry ice.

Tiny particles of dry ice can be shot using compressed air to blast electrical equipment and machinery that would not otherwise be able to be blasted. This media can only be used once, since it melts quickly, but it also leaves very little environmental impact. Now that you are aware of some of the different types of sandblast media available, you are prepared to make an informed decision about the best type for your project. Remember to start with the softest media possible and work your way up, if needed. Always dispose of media properly, and remember to be safe when working with sandblasting equipment.

January 23rd, 2012 No comments

Green living is an activity everyone is able to perform to help heal our planet. The majority of us damage the environment everyday without giving it any thought and the effects are starting to be noticed. Driving your car or truck, using electrical power and throwing recyclable waste away are all harmful to the environment. Going entirely green can be difficult as well as expensive, like installing solar panels for homes or using solar powered pond pumps on your gardens but every single one of us can do little things to make a positive change. Here are some tips for green living.

You might like to consider changing the light bulbs in your home to the new cost effective fluorescent bulbs. Despite the fact that these light bulbs are a little bit more expensive than the standard light bulbs they cost a lot less to use. Not only that but a fluorescent light bulb can last up to 10 times longer than your conventional bulb and they will at the same time provide you with more and better light.

When your not working with something, switch it off and perhaps unplug it if you’re able to. You may also be wasting electrical energy without even knowing it. For those who have even a tiny light on, on a product that is turned off, it is wasting power. You may also be squandering electrical power by leaving your cell phone plugged in after is has been charged.

Want a easy way to save money and lower pollution, try reducing your thermostat 1 degree. You can actually save up to ten percent of your oil usage by using this one trick. With time these types of fuel saves can add up to a lot of money.

Rather than turning the heating on any time youre somewhat cold simply wrap up in more layers. Wear a jumper or perhaps a overcoat. Youll save energy and also cash.

Obtain a laptop computer rather than a Pc, as notebook computers use just half the energy a regular desktop pc uses. Not to mention when a laptop is being run off its battery power it isn’t wasting any electricity.

Should you have an automobile make sure you maintain it in good condition. Obviously its better to walk or cycle, or even to get the train or bus, however, if you do have to use your car then make absolutely sure its in full working order. One thing people don’t typically think about is making sure that your tires air pressure is exactly where it ought to be. Tires that are low on air reduce the efficiency of your car or truck. Following these simple measures for your automobiles maintenance will assist you to help the earth and reduce your fuel charges concurrently.

Water is actually wasted quite simply in homes due to flushing toilets and running the washing machine. I really do recognize that these things really are a necessity and you can not go without them, but you can obtain products that could save you water and money. By simply conserving your water you can also be able to lower your water bill. You most likely were not aware that most new toilets you can purchase now incorporate two different options for flushing. Many of the new toilets today have options to use the normal about of water or to work with a low water flush.

Do not forget the 3 R s? Reuse, recycle and reduce. Make certain you take all your recyclable materials and place them in the proper containers. And because most rubbish companies provide you recyclable bins, keeping every thing segregated isn’t really that difficult. You also might want to give thought to reusing plastic cups and plastic plates and also the plastic cutlery, you will save money and be helping to recycle.

Simply by making a handful of little changes and putting in a little effort, you can make the planet healthier. Recycling isn’t just a phase, it’s really a necessity for our planet, if we do not start protecting the environment, over time our planet will likely be uninhabitable.

Coffee Making Basics

January 19th, 2012 No comments

If you are interested in making good coffee at home there are a few things that you’ll need to know about.  It isn’t complicated, and it certainly doesn’t have to be expensive, but there are some good guidelines and best practices that you can follow to ensure you are getting the best results.

  • Invest in a good conical burr coffee grinder.  These don’t have to be expensive, check out this article for more information about some inexpensive options.  The reason you want a conical burr grinder is they crush coffee beans in a very particular way, allowing for more flavor notes and nuances to be extracted from the coffee bean.  This is the same type of technology that the industry professionals use to grind their coffee beans.
  • Try out some new brew methods.  There are lots of different ways to brew coffee including moka pots, pour over apparatuses, french presses, and many others.  Most of these can be purchased at very reasonable prices.  So try some of them out – you’ll be amazed at how much better tasting coffee you’ll render once you start thinking outside of the drip pot.
  • Get in touch with a local roasting company.  They are all over the place and charge incredibly competitive prices.  Local roasters want to stay in business which means keeping their coffee priced under what you would find in the grocery store – and yet the coffee from a local roaster will be significantly fresher than anything you’ll ever find on the shelf at a grocer.  Get in touch with one and try some of their different beans.  Roasters can also educate you a lot on different methods of learning how to make coffee.  Some even offer subscription plans, so you can pay a monthly fee in order to get a great discount on their beans.

If you just follow these three guidelines and keep an open mind to your coffee brewing, you’ll find there are tons of subtleties to the coffee trade.  It doesn’t take a lot of time or energy to learn how to make great coffee, but the rewards you reap from learning these basics will be monumental.
