January 23rd, 2012 No comments

Green living is an activity everyone is able to perform to help heal our planet. The majority of us damage the environment everyday without giving it any thought and the effects are starting to be noticed. Driving your car or truck, using electrical power and throwing recyclable waste away are all harmful to the environment. Going entirely green can be difficult as well as expensive, like installing solar panels for homes or using solar powered pond pumps on your gardens but every single one of us can do little things to make a positive change. Here are some tips for green living.

You might like to consider changing the light bulbs in your home to the new cost effective fluorescent bulbs. Despite the fact that these light bulbs are a little bit more expensive than the standard light bulbs they cost a lot less to use. Not only that but a fluorescent light bulb can last up to 10 times longer than your conventional bulb and they will at the same time provide you with more and better light.

When your not working with something, switch it off and perhaps unplug it if you’re able to. You may also be wasting electrical energy without even knowing it. For those who have even a tiny light on, on a product that is turned off, it is wasting power. You may also be squandering electrical power by leaving your cell phone plugged in after is has been charged.

Want a easy way to save money and lower pollution, try reducing your thermostat 1 degree. You can actually save up to ten percent of your oil usage by using this one trick. With time these types of fuel saves can add up to a lot of money.

Rather than turning the heating on any time youre somewhat cold simply wrap up in more layers. Wear a jumper or perhaps a overcoat. Youll save energy and also cash.

Obtain a laptop computer rather than a Pc, as notebook computers use just half the energy a regular desktop pc uses. Not to mention when a laptop is being run off its battery power it isn’t wasting any electricity.

Should you have an automobile make sure you maintain it in good condition. Obviously its better to walk or cycle, or even to get the train or bus, however, if you do have to use your car then make absolutely sure its in full working order. One thing people don’t typically think about is making sure that your tires air pressure is exactly where it ought to be. Tires that are low on air reduce the efficiency of your car or truck. Following these simple measures for your automobiles maintenance will assist you to help the earth and reduce your fuel charges concurrently.

Water is actually wasted quite simply in homes due to flushing toilets and running the washing machine. I really do recognize that these things really are a necessity and you can not go without them, but you can obtain products that could save you water and money. By simply conserving your water you can also be able to lower your water bill. You most likely were not aware that most new toilets you can purchase now incorporate two different options for flushing. Many of the new toilets today have options to use the normal about of water or to work with a low water flush.

Do not forget the 3 R s? Reuse, recycle and reduce. Make certain you take all your recyclable materials and place them in the proper containers. And because most rubbish companies provide you recyclable bins, keeping every thing segregated isn’t really that difficult. You also might want to give thought to reusing plastic cups and plastic plates and also the plastic cutlery, you will save money and be helping to recycle.

Simply by making a handful of little changes and putting in a little effort, you can make the planet healthier. Recycling isn’t just a phase, it’s really a necessity for our planet, if we do not start protecting the environment, over time our planet will likely be uninhabitable.

Coffee Making Basics

January 19th, 2012 No comments

If you are interested in making good coffee at home there are a few things that you’ll need to know about.  It isn’t complicated, and it certainly doesn’t have to be expensive, but there are some good guidelines and best practices that you can follow to ensure you are getting the best results.

  • Invest in a good conical burr coffee grinder.  These don’t have to be expensive, check out this article for more information about some inexpensive options.  The reason you want a conical burr grinder is they crush coffee beans in a very particular way, allowing for more flavor notes and nuances to be extracted from the coffee bean.  This is the same type of technology that the industry professionals use to grind their coffee beans.
  • Try out some new brew methods.  There are lots of different ways to brew coffee including moka pots, pour over apparatuses, french presses, and many others.  Most of these can be purchased at very reasonable prices.  So try some of them out – you’ll be amazed at how much better tasting coffee you’ll render once you start thinking outside of the drip pot.
  • Get in touch with a local roasting company.  They are all over the place and charge incredibly competitive prices.  Local roasters want to stay in business which means keeping their coffee priced under what you would find in the grocery store – and yet the coffee from a local roaster will be significantly fresher than anything you’ll ever find on the shelf at a grocer.  Get in touch with one and try some of their different beans.  Roasters can also educate you a lot on different methods of learning how to make coffee.  Some even offer subscription plans, so you can pay a monthly fee in order to get a great discount on their beans.

If you just follow these three guidelines and keep an open mind to your coffee brewing, you’ll find there are tons of subtleties to the coffee trade.  It doesn’t take a lot of time or energy to learn how to make great coffee, but the rewards you reap from learning these basics will be monumental.

There Is a Pretty Big Difference between a Sod Cutter and a Manual Sod Cutter

January 17th, 2012 No comments

If you want to be able to get the most sought amount with the least amount of effort and time, the best way that you can do this is by using a mechanical grass sod cutter. A sod cutter is fairly easy to operate. All you have to be able to do is to pick the right gear that you want to cut in. Lower the blade down to the desired depth, and then engage the blades. When you do all of these things at the same time, you will be able to cut and remove the sod very quickly. When you’re using a sod cutter, you want to make sure to keep your lines as level as possible, and you want to make sure to not overlap. This will make it a lot easier for you when you go to roll up and dispose of your sought.

Most of the time, and 18 inch cutter works much better than a 12 inch sod cutter because it not only saves you time, but helps you to keep your machine much more level when you’re using it. A manual sod cutter is a good tool if you’re just trying to trim up the sides of your lawn, but if you’re planning on removing more than three or 400 ft.² of sod, you would be better off just renting a sod cutter. The reason is because it is still pretty difficult to use a manual cutter. It takes a lot of work and energy in order to get the best job done. In addition, it is harder to keep a manual sod cutter level and even as you is using it to cut with. Even though you can probably own your own manual sod cutter, and you won’t have to keep on renting one, it is probably worth the time and effort to rent just because it is easier to use a rental machine than it is to use a manual cutter.

Manual sod cutters can work well when you’re trying to install, or even when you are trying to shrink your lawn down a little bit, but they don’t work that great for big grass removal jobs. If your lawn is completely dead, because of past disease or lawn disease, you’re going to want to use a sod cutter to remove it. Also, make sure that you have some help in removing all the sod and hauling it to the dump, because this actually requires a time and a ton of work.

How to Deal with Frozen Pipes

January 12th, 2012 No comments

Every year, many homeowners have to deal with problems concerning the piping system in their homes, especially come the cold weather. Since frozen pipes have a tendency to break and burst, acting immediately is very important.

Although it is safe to say that most piping systems are created to resist various weather and temperature changes, they can only do so for so long. Thus, knowing what do in case they freeze will help you prevent the worse.

One very important thing that should be remembered when dealing with piping lines that froze is that they need to be thawed as soon as possible. If you will wait for them to remain in that state much longer, they might burst.

There are various ways that you can actually employ to help ensure that your piping system will remain intact despite the weather condition. However, aside from acting immediately, you need to be careful in carrying out the procedures too.

One effective way that you can do when addressing the issue of frozen pipes is to use a blow dryer. This device is effective in heating a cold water piping line, especially if it is in the point of freezing to get rid of and melt the clog.

Another way of getting rid of the ice formation inside the pipelines is to use electric wraps. In addition, one may chose to place a spaces heater to help thaw the fixtures in case the temperature gets way too low.

There may be situations though that once the thawing process has been performed, water may start leaking from the pipeline. If this happens, it is important that you will shut off the whole water distribution system to prevent the water from coming in.

Frozen pipes that burst may have to be fixed and replaced. If you think you cannot get the job done on your own, then it is best that you will refer to the assistance of a reliable plumber so your piping system will be fully functional in no time.

Spring: A Great Time for Flower Crafts

January 4th, 2012 No comments

There are different times of the year when parents and teachers like to do different kinds of arts and crafts with their kids. When choosing art projects for toddlers or arts and crafts for any of the early childhood classes, or even early elementary school it is a good idea to match up the season or the holiday with an appropriate art project. If it is going to be Independence day, than flag making would be a good project to do with the kids. If it’s wintertime than snowmen or snow collages are good and if its springtime thane  the best activities are flower crafts for kids.

There are many ways to do flower crafts with kids. If you are an old traditionalist and you do want to veer to far from the traditional path then tissue paper flowers would be a great idea for you to do. The basic concept in this craft is to stack a few pieces of different colored tissue paper together, fold them into a fan, put a pipe cleaner in the middle and then pull all the pieces forward making a nice, fluffy flower. The pipe cleaner then becomes the stem.

If you want to be a little bit more progressive then there is another flower crafts ideas to do that the kids get to have more choices in. First show the children an array of flower pictures to get an idea of the different ways they can make their pictures. They can see flowers in a window, in a garden ,one flower, many flowers or a person holding flowers. Once they decide what it is they want to do, you then offer them a bunch of materials that they can use to create their flower pictures with. Each child’s picture will come out different and interesting, yet they will all look like flower pictures based on the materials that you have given them to paste.

Get maximum security for your home

December 31st, 2011 No comments

Your patio door is the most vulnerable way into your home for criminals.  One of the strongest and hardest patio door locks to break into is the patio door bolt. Patio door locks are a strong, oftentimes steel, bolt that holds your door in place when someone is trying to pry the door open.

Compared with other security methods, your patio door locks can become one of the most difficult entry points to your home for burglars.  These can include locking bars, clips, alarms, security glass, and safety film.  A combination of security devices is the best deterrent to theft.

With so many door security devices available on the market that cost substantially less, you may be wondering why the bolt is the best answer.  Other options that do not require keys, such as the bar and other patio door locks, seem just as good.

The other patio door locks are effective at preventing burglary, but a bolt lock with a key is the strongest of all the methods.  It can prevent the sliding door from being lifted off of the slider track, which is a common method of breaking into a sliding patio door.  The most effective way to deter crime is to use a combination of door security devices.

The optimal option for installation patio door locks is top and bottom.  This configuration may be inconvenient because it requires that both keyed bolts be unlocked before the door can be opened.

The window or patio door clamp locks are one of the cheapest methods.  They are also the easiest to install.  They don’t require any tools and can be attached and detached in a matter of a few seconds.  They are also very strong little devices that do not damage your door or sliding track. A locking bar is an easy addition.

Certainly for the safety of your family invest in a patio door locks.

5 Excellent Reasons to Dethatch my Lawn

December 15th, 2011 No comments

Thatch can be defined as a naturally occurring, unwanted layers of grass stems, roots, debris and clippings.   Thatch is the layer in between the grass line and the soil of the lawn. Usually, if the layer of thatch is not thicker enough, it is hard to see. The layer of thatch grows over the time.

There are plenty of reasons why thatch problems develop.  Poor maintenance of lawn is the major reason why thatch grows.  It   can result from not mowing often enough or not fertililizing on a regular basis. When it develops, you need to thatch it out of your lawn.  You can do this with a power rake or dethatcher, to help get rid of the thatch.

Thatch definitely affects the performance of lawn. Below are some reasons:

  • Thatch makes a lawn unhealthy – as we already discussed, the thatches is a layer in-between the soil of the lawn and the grass line. When the thatches grow thicker it will absorb high amount of water and the nutrients, leaving the lawn unhealthy. Result will be the suffocation of the grass.
  • Poor circulation of oxygen – when the layer of thatches accumulate, the air circulation to the root become disturb. If you do not take any action such as using power lawn rake, it would be obvious that you will have a dead lawn.
  • Weather condition – Especially during the fall season, most trees tend to lose their leaves, leaving the leaves on the grass of the lawn. Gradually those leaves absorbs in to the soil leaving a layer of thatches. Therefore, in such weather conditions regular detaching is mandatory.
  • It increases the fertilizer absorption – proper dethatching will result the thatch layer to become thinner, so that the grass will absorb the fertilizers properly.
  • Reduce the compactness of the soil – if the thick thatch layer stays for a long time, it will increase the compactness of soil. That is equally dangerous as thatches.

Wild Rice is Hard to Tame

December 13th, 2011 No comments

The state grain for MInnesota is not corn or soybeans, but wild rice. I am pretty sure that the state soup is creamy chicken wild rice soup. And wild rice is not really rice but an annual water grass seed that is full of nutrients and protein. Should we change the name of the soup to wild grass soup? Wild rice is still grown wild and has resisted being tamed or farmed commercially.

Historically, wild rice was a large part of the diet for the Chippewa and Sioux Indians in this region. Even today, it is still harvested in the same tradition of the native Indians. You must purchase a state license, go out into the paddies in a canoe during the regulated season (usually in September), and power the canoe through the paddy with a long pole while another person uses two rice beater sticks to knock the rice off of the stalk and into the canoe.

The grain is harvested green. The Indians parched the rice in a fire and that would cure it so that it could be stored indefinitely. A similar parching process is used today to remove the moisture from the grain. This gives it that unique roasted, nutty flavor that we all love.

The wild rice thrives in the colder climates of the north. It needs lots of energy from the sun in the spring to start germinating from the depths of the lake or stream and produce a seed that is very high in protein. Migrating ducks and geese utilize this grain as a rich source of protein to replenish their energy supply for their long journey. But the wild rice plant protects itself from too much seed loss in the fall from these migrating birds, early frost, and severe weather. The plant responds to signals to produce seeds at different times to prevent these large losses.

You can start to understand why it has been so difficult to tame this crop. It has retained it’s character. I am cooking for two these days and I am reminded of the roots of this crop whenever I serve up a favorite wild rice dressing, soup, or other dish with this grain as a healthy base for the recipe.
