La Palma Island

December 4th, 2011 No comments

Just a stone-throw away from the neighbour archipelago of Azores Islands, Canaries very own island of La Palma is the island they call La Isla Bonita, the Pretty Island. So green and beautiful and with such a variety of scenic attractions that it’s surprising more tourists have not discovered it yet. The steep coasts of the coastline, there are only two or three beaches, rise to a high plateau in the north, in the centre of which lies the world’s largest volcanic crater, La Caldera de Taburiente. The island’s highest peaks encircle the crater, Roque de los Muchachos (7,960 ft), Pico de la Cruz (7,700 ft), Pico de la Nieve (7,480 ft) and La Cumbrecita (6,170 ft), which has a single opening to the southwest along the deep ravine called Barranco de las Angustias. South of the crater the narrow dorsal ridge bisects the island, extending to an area of active volcanoes at the southern tip, including La Palma’s most recently active volcano, Teneguia.

But it’s not the volcanic nature of La Palma that leaves the most lasting impression; it’s the lush vegetation, both glorious natural plant life and richly cultivated agricultural areas, bananas, vines, almond trees that cast their snowy blossoms over the hillsides throughout March and April. For this, the most north-westerly of the Canary Islands, has abundant subterranean water reserves, amply supplied by los alisios, the moisture carrying trade winds, conserved in large modern dams and a hundred mirror-like reservoirs.

West of La Palma is the vast empty Atlantic, offering magnificent sunsets and cloud pictures. It’s thought that the nonexistent island of San Borondon, supposedly discovered by the 7th century Irish sailing monk, St Brendan, was either a mirage, a result of one of these cloud pictures, or an attempt by the superstitious to turn the archipelago into fourteen islands, not thirteen (seven major islands plus the six minor ones off Lanzarote and Fuerteventura). Anyway the island has never been found, and all that remains to recall St Brendan’s doubtful presence here is the village of San Borondon south of Tazacorte.

What is the Highest in Spain?

November 24th, 2011 No comments

Soaring high above the sea, this solitary volcano has been a beacon to seafarers since ancient times. Approaching Spain’s Canary Islands off the coast of West Africa by sea or by air, the traveler first glimpses sometimes snowcapped Pico de Teide —a memorable sight. The summit of the great volcanic peak, soaring 12,198 feet (3,718 meters) above the sea, is the highest point on all Spanish territory, and indeed in the entire Atlantic Ocean. Known to seafarers since remotest antiquity, it was regarded as a welcoming beacon by those early sailors who dared venture beyond the Strait of Gibraltar out into the open Atlantic.

The volcano, which makes up the entire island of Tenerife (the name means “mountain of snow”), was once even higher than it is today. Like the rest of the Canaries, Tenerife was formed by a succession of lava flows that welled up through a fissure in the ocean floor. It is believed that a buildup of pressure from gases trapped in the original volcano eventually resulted in a tremendous explosion, followed by the collapse of the summit into the core of the mountain.

The result was a caldera—a huge, oval, craterlike depression on the top of the mountain 10 miles (16 kilometers) long and 7 miles (11 kilometers) wide. High up on the mountainsides, steep ridges known as Las Cafiadas mark the rim of this giant basin. Millions of years later, renewed eruptions built up a succession of new volcanic cones within the caldera, including the magnificent Pico de Teide. And even today fumaroles (vents emitting sulfurous fumes) in the caldera hint of the possibility of volcanic activity continuing long into the future.

The mountaintop, protected in the 50 square miles (130 square kilometers) of Teide National Park, is accessible by roads leading to Las Cafiadas, and from there by cable cars to the slopes of Pico de Teide. Visitors can observe a variety of volcanic phenomena in the stark caldera, including the steaming fumaroles, sulfur deposits, chaotic flows of red and black lava, and shimmering bits of obsidian, a type of volcanic glass.

Hikers can also follow a trail to the very summit of Pico de Teide. Offering spectacular views of both sunrise and sunset, it is also a superb vantage point for viewing the entire Canary archipelago, seemingly adrift on the restless sea. They may also find a hardy bluish-violet gillyflower growing not far away, its delicate hues recalling the color of the volcano looming against the sky at dusk. Sarah writes for the web and loves travelling, she has just returned from her visit to Prague.

Moon Madness in Haad Rin

October 13th, 2011 No comments

The moon holds a special place in many cultures. It has massive symbolic significance and has an archetypal quality. Old calendars used the moon’s cycle as its measure for a month. The moon is associated with madness – hence the word ‘lunacy’; it is also connected to the menstrual cycle of women. The moon is the ying to the sun’s yang. The list of cultural connections to the moon could go on for thousands of words.

For many young people none of the above holds much importance compared to the Full Moon Party in Thailand. The moon at its zenith means it is time to head to Haad Rin beach on the small Thai island of Koh Phangan.

Legend has it that the first Full Moon Party was held at Paradise Bungalows on Haad Rin Nok in 1987. The party was for someone’s birthday. Those who attended had such a good time that it was decided they should have a repeat full moon bash the following month. From there the party grew and grew. Until today it is an event that regularly attracts 20,000 people.

I first went to the Full Moon Party in 2002. I arrived by speed boat from Thong Nai Pan and was put in an average mood by seeing a policeman as soon as I stepped ashore. The party was full of police as well as sex workers. In the few hours that I stayed at the party I saw one man passed out with a Thai going through his pockets. I also saw hundreds of people use the sea as a toilet.

The party consists of about 10 sound systems that belong to the principal bars on the beach. The music was mostly psy-trance with some house, R n B, pop and drum and bass. None of the DJs were famous and the party seemed to be more about getting drunk or otherwise high rather than the music.

The final low point was arguing with taxi drivers in an attempt to get back to Thong Nai Pan Noi for a fair price.

I guess if I had been younger I would have enjoyed the world’s largest full moon party more. As it is I feel it is lunacy to go out of your way to attend a party in Haad Rin since nearly every beach in Koh Phangan has a party night at the local bar. The music is equally as bad and the drinks are cheaper.

Four Reasons A Limo Service Is Perfect For A Night Out

October 3rd, 2011 No comments

If you are thinking about a night out on the town, but you aren’t sure what to do about transportation, a limo is exactly what you need.  Hiring a limo service to give you luxury transportation can be extremely convenient especially when you are trying to get around in a very busy city like New York.

When you plan a special night you want to make sure that the transportation is taken care of, because when you are in a busy city finding transportation can be extremely difficult.  So the first reason to hiring a limo service is the convenience factor.  By having a limo you don’t have to worry about flagging down a taxi driver or worry about catching the right subway.  The limo service will have your address of where you would like to go as well as be dropped off.

Hiring a limo service will not only give you luxury transportation, but it will help resolve the issue of finding a designated driver.  The second reason for hiring a limo service is that you get a designated driver while you book the limo.  The limo driver is your automatic designated driver, which helps resolve the difficult issue of finding a designated driver for your night out on the town.

The third reason to rent a limo is the party continues on even after the party you left is over.  In the limo there will be drinks and music and even lighting that helps keep the mood of the party going.

Whether you are new in town or you are a local, the limo driver knows all the great places in town to take you.  Reason number four is to relax if you aren’t sure where to go into town, the limo driver will know of some great places to go.

VinoCap Wine Fair, Cap d’Agde

September 7th, 2011 No comments

Cap d’Agde has become not only a popular destination for tourists, but also a popular resort in which to hold business events and trade fairs. The resort lies on the coast of the Mediterranean, in the heart of France’s well-known Languedoc region and flights to Cap d’Agde are now plentiful and cheap making this area great for business events. One important event is the VinoCap wine fair, which has been held in the resort twice.

Of course, the Languedoc area of France is well known for its quality wines; in fact it is the country’s largest wine producing region, although for many years, quality seemed more important than quantity. In the last ten years or so, the region’s wines have enjoyed more acclaim and critical success and today, several well respected wines come from the Languedoc region.

Wine is now a major part of the economy of the area and the VinoCap wine fair is an opportunity for the area to show just how far it has come in terms of quality wine production. The wine fair features over 100 stalls, with local wine producers displaying and selling their product. For visitors, the chance to sample some of the best wines in France is too good to miss and all you need is the souvenir wine glass, which costs five Euros and which then allows you to sample as many wines as you want to. In addition to the drink, there is also some delicious local food available and local chefs have the chance to prepare local dishes and choose the right wine to go with them. If you would like to learn more about wine, the fair also features several experts giving talks on various aspects.

This resort has no shortage of accommodation for all budgets including some great Cap d’Agde hotels, and whether you are visiting for the fair or simply for the beaches and nightlife, this French resort has plenty to offer.

Alternatives to Sairee Beach

September 5th, 2011 No comments

Sairee Beach is nearly as famous as either Haad Rin in Koh Phangan and Chaweng in Koh Samui. What these beaches have in common is that they are all the central tourist hubs for their respective islands. Chaweng resembles a mini-Bangkok near to the beach. Haad Rin draws 20,000 or more Full Moon devotees for a few days every month, and Sairee Beach attracts the vast majority of those who go to Koh Tao to either learn how to dive or to party.

There is nothing wrong with following the crowd. For many people they feel bored without lots of distractions on their holiday. They want the bright lights, the loud music and the choice that tourist traps provide.

For others these places represent the worst aspects of travel – mass consumption and  disrespect for local culture and traditions. Admittedly Sairee Beach is not as bad as Haad Rin or Chaweng in terms of numbers and noise but it is hardly a peaceful and idyllic place.

For those looking for a tranquil beach away from the madding crowds there are a number of excellent choices. Just south of Sairee is an equally fine beach called Jansom Bay. It is a private beach on Koh Tao with just one resort called Charm Churee Village. The resort has reasonably priced air-con bungalows with hot water and is near all the facilities of the main town of Mae Haad.

On the south coast there is Sai Daeng. It is a crescent shaped beach flanked with boulders. There are plenty of colorful corals teeming with marine life to explore. Sai Daeng has two places to stay: Coral View Resort and New Haven Resort. They both have clean and comfortable bungalows near the beach. It is a peaceful beach with even more deserted beaches nearby.

Finally, on the east coast is Tanote Bay. It is reached via a bumpy, hill road that deters those who meaninglessly buzz around on hired motorbikes. There are a few bungalow operations on the beach offering a range of prices. The beach at Tanote Bay is great for swimming and sunbathing. It also has some corals just off the coast that are ideal for snorkeling. Tanote Bay has a few bars and restaurants but avoids the later night noise that plagues Sairee Beach.

As you can see there are some great alternatives to Sairee Beach. All the places mentioned – Jansom Bay, Sai Daeng and Tanote Bay have dive schools that offer smaller groups and more personal service. There really is no reason for everyone to flock to Sairee Beach.
